Category: Powerboats
Aft Cabin; Vessel in which the master cabin is
located in rear or aft portion of the boat.
Angler; Open fishing boat designed for offshore or large bays
and lakes. Sometimes found with small cabins.
Bass Boat; Open fishing boat with flush decks for ease of
standing and casting. Small electric trolling motors auxiliary to
larger gasoline powerplant.
Bowrider; Runabout powerboats characterized by an open area
forward of the console with seating for passengers.
Catamaran (Power); Twin hulls joined by a solid structure or
support posts. Is known for greater stability in seas and wind.
Center Console; Open powerboat with a central console
consisting of steering, engine controls and electronics, popular
with anglers and as a runabout.
Classic (Power); Older vessels regarded for their design and
workmanship.
Commercial; Boats designed specifically for business use,
such as cargo, fishing, or passenger service.
Convertible; Good for cruising and fishing, these boats
feature large, open deck-level cabins and open cockpits.
Cruiser (Power); Designed for those who prefer traveling.
Emphasis is on comfort and ease of operation rather than speed or
performance.
Cuddy Cabin; Runabout or fishing boats with small cabins for
sleeping and/or cooking. Designed for short trips.
Deck Boat; Boats designed for drifting or low-powered
cruising on lakes and rivers. Characterized by open, spacious deck
for seating or small parties.
Downeast; Cruising powerboat featuring a tall salon/console
giving way to a shorter deck forward and an open cockpit aft.
Express; A cruiser with an open, deck-level cabin for
entertaining.
Flats Boat; Specialty fishing boat for use in shallow waters
such as mud or sand flats.
Flybridge; Powerboat featuring a raised platform above the
cabin and deck with its own set of engine controls and electronics.
High Performance; Powerboats designed for high-speed cruising

Houseboat; Powerboats designed similarly to small condos with
boxy design used for slow cruising or second or first homes.
Jet Boat; Any motorboat powered by a jet drive, which uses a
high-speed pump rather than a propeller.
Jon Boat; Small open motorboats without a console or cabin
powered by a small outboard engine.
Motoryacht; Large powerboats designed for comfort, luxury and
distance cruising.
Motoryacht With Cockpit; Same as Motoryacht with a larger
open area in the aftermost section of the boat for outdoor
gathering.
Open Fisherman; Powerboats without cabins or oversized
consoles designed for ease of movement by anglers throughout the
boat.
Pilothouse; Boats that feature a prominent, enclosed cabin
for the skipper or pilot of the vessel.
Pontoon; Usually deck or party boats that use aluminum, steel
or composite pontoons for the hull.
Runabout; Smaller powerboat designed for day-trips, cruising
and some watersports such as skiing.
Sedan Bridge; A cruising powerboat with a salon and separate
bridge for the captain.
Ski Boat; Powerboat specially designed to tow waterskiers.
Small Cruiser; Motorboats designed for couple or family
cruising.
Sport Fisherman; Larger powerboats designed for offshore
fishing.
Sunbridge; Cruising powerboat with a deck level cabin and
open cockpit.
Superyacht; Term reserved for the largest power yachts,

Racer; Boat designed for sailboat racing characterized by a
more complex sail plan, lighter weight, and fewer comfort amenities.
Sloop; Sailboat featuring one, straight mast with a masthead
rigged mainsail and a single headstay and jib.
